1994 World Snooker Championship
The 1994 Embassy World Snooker Championship professional ranking snooker tournament took place between 16 April and 2 May 1994 at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield.
The final between Stephen Hendry and Jimmy White turned out to be the best of their four World finals together with Hendry winning 18–17. With White in amongst the balls and the finishing line in sight, he missed a routine black off the spot, from which Hendry duly cleaned up.
Notable moments
- Hendry's hopes to win the 1994 title seemed dashed after he fell in his hotel room in Sheffield and broke his left arm. He had beaten Surinder Gill in the first round 10–1 before the incident happened. Hendry carried on despite the accident and beat Dave Harold, Nigel Bond and Steve Davis (which Hendry needed to win to keep his number one spot in the World Rankings) before beating White in the final.
- The tournament saw the final appearance of three former champions: Cliff Thorburn, Alex Higgins and Dennis Taylor. In his first appearance at the Crucible since 1990, Thorburn led Nigel Bond 9–2 before losing 9–10. Higgins lost 6–10 to Ken Doherty and Taylor was defeated 6–10 by Ronnie O'Sullivan and consequently dropped out of the top 16. Taylor was the last remaining player who had featured in the original 1976 rankings and the last player to have appeared at the Crucible every year since the championship was first staged there in 1977.
- There were 35 centuries in the 1994 Embassy World Championship, a joint record from 1993.[1] The highest break of the tournament was 143 made by Alan McManus. The highest break of the qualifying stage was 146 made by Karl Payne.[2]
